Possible to use downed trees from storms?

There's a lot of local downed trees from our winter storms. Some are in people's front yards. Very tempting but do you think potential lawn care fertilizers could be absorbed into the trees and into the oil?

Is it best to stick to trees on private, more secluded untouched lands?
Some of these trees are huge. I wonder if somehow they are able to filter out chemicals better than a small plant like basil etc.

This depends on how the garden owners cultivate their yards. I don’t know how this is in Canada, but here in Germany most people don’t use pesticides in abundance for their private properties. Fertilizers are no problem, they are depleted and converted by the plants. Of course you shouldn’t use plants which grow near to industrial plants, highways, or in big cities which have pollutant problems.
